Iron mining made Mine Hill
Mine Hill began as part of northwestern Randolph Township. Its modern identity grew from one of New Jersey's important iron-producing areas, where surface deposits and underground mines drew workers and industry for more than two centuries.
Early mining
Iron ore was identified in the area by the early 1700s. The mine later known as the Dickerson Mine became one of the community's defining industrial sites.
The Dickerson family
Jonathan Dickerson acquired the property in 1779. His son Mahlon Dickerson later managed the mine and served as Governor of New Jersey from 1815 to 1817.
A landscape of mines
Historic county research identifies at least 21 mines operating in Mine Hill over time, including the Dickerson, Baker, Crane, Dover, Boonton, Trenton, Replogle and Alan Wood operations.
Mining-site safety matters. Historic mining terrain can contain dangerous depressions, shafts or other features. Visitors should stay on established public trails and never enter fenced, closed or unmarked mine areas.
Bridget Smith House Museum
A worker's home that tells Mine Hill's story
Built around 1855 in the area historically known as Irishtown, the Bridget Smith House is an unusually well-preserved example of a two-family iron miner's dwelling. Bridget Smith, the widow of a miner, purchased the home in 1879 and lived in one side while another mining widow and her family occupied the other.
The house later became Township property and is operated as a museum by the Ferromonte Historical Society of Mine Hill. Restoration supported by state and county historic-preservation funding has helped preserve the building and improve accessibility.

Mine Hill's open-space story is inseparable from its mining history. The Dickerson Mine Preserve converts a former industrial landscape into a trail network used for hiking and mountain biking, while Township recreation areas support organized sports and community activities.

Boating
